What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Having faith isn’t always easy. In fact, it can seem impossible to have faith at times. Why is that? Faith as defined in the dictionary is “complete faith in someone or something”. Hebrews 11:1 describes it as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (NIV). Seems pretty crazy right?

Why in the world would we believe in something invisible? Some argue that it would make more sense to believe in science. But to have faith takes a special kind of courage. It requires next level confidence in something far greater than you. Does a child forming in the womb of a woman make sense? How about God forming the earth, the sea, the stars and the moon? We have faith that each season the flowers will bloom again. The circle of life will continue with new life being born.

Faith will push you to go after that job, scholarship or relationship that may seem “out of reach”. Faith will push you to dream bigger than your present circumstance. Faith will cause you to pray healing over yourself and believe so strongly that your illness has no choice but to be moved. Not luck, Not manifestation. Faith.

Now listen. Trust me, I know first hand what it looks like to pray your heart out and then still have a hint of doubt left in you. We’re human. We’re children of God — not God. But as our faith grows that doubt will begin to fade. All it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed. God can do ANYTHING but fail. If whatever you’re praying for doesn’t happen it’s not because He can’t make it happen. It’s either not meant for you or it’s just not your season. Keep trusting, keep praying and keep your faith.
